My Story - You thought you could break us...

Yeah, you thought that we’d stay down.…

October 1

It’s been 3 years now....

There was once a time where life was “normal”. I was also crazy excited to finally be getting ready for an amazing weekend of all thing’s country. Jerry and I had been given tickets to the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas as a gift. I couldn’t believe it! 3 days of some of my favorite artists of all time were going to be there! 72 hours after we arrived our lives were destroyed, forever changed, or so I thought. October 1 is a day that will never be forgotten by any of us.

Time moves on and today our world is different. There will be no RT91 family reunion, no Strip to walk down, no people watching, singing or dancing. And it has NOTHING to do with us but with things out of our control, again…. We’ve been here before, the not knowing, the anger, the fear, the frustration and you know what?

Someday soon, we will once again be walking the Strip, playing the slots and people watching. Singing, dancing and finding each other in the City of Lights, in “Sin City”. How? We just do. We can find each other anywhere. It’s in our ribbons, our shirts, our boots, our tattoos, our hearts and our songs.

We are 22,000 strong and these are the lyrics to one of them…

She's not much of a backrow
She's a stand-up front singing every single note
She’s tatted up with cutoff jeans
She's a countrified American dream
Her life is right there in every Aldean line
Between the sad and the hate that can enter her mind
‘Bout the hell fire that rained on down
And it happened in her own hometown
Yeah, you thought you could break her
But fear don't live here long...

Cuz she's a freedom fighter, up all-nighter, a neon-lighter, she's a survivor
Gonna keep on raisin’ hell
Cause if she don't then the devil wins
She's goin' back in
First responding
Helpin’ and doin' whatever it is she can
Lookin' like a city of sin
From the outside lookin' in
Yeah, you thought that we'd stay down
But you were wrong...

He's more of a dirt road
His dusty work boots
And a long cut skoal
He’s a Carhartt with cut of sleeves
He's chasin' that American dream
The lighting in his soul from a cowboy song
Keeps his 14-hour days just a powerin’ on
And when you’re getting’ down and runnin’ scared
He’ll be standing up tall with his finger in the air
Yeah, you thought that you could break him
But fear don't live here long...

Cuz he's a freedom fighter, up all-nighter, a neon-lighter, he's a survivor
Gonna keep on raisin’ hell
Cause if he don't then the devil wins
He’s goin' back in
First responding
Helpin’ and doin' whatever it is he can
Lookin' like a city of sin
From the outside lookin' in
Yeah, you thought that we'd stay down
But you were wrong...
Cuz we’re VEGAS STRONG

Through the runnin’ and the gunnin’
Takin’ cover
We lost fathers and sons
Mother and daughters and lovers
Now the road to recover
No, it won’t be long
No, it won’t be long

Cuz we’re freedom fighters, up all-nighters, neon-lighters, we are SURVIVORS
Gonna keep on raisin’ hell
Cause if we don't then the devil wins
We’re goin' back in
First responding
Helpin’ and doin' whatever it is we can
Lookin' like a city of sin
From the outside lookin' in
Yeah, you thought that we'd stay down
But you were wrong...

Our country music hearts beat on and on
Cuz We’re Vegas Strong
