The Willow tree has been around for thousands of years. It was first prescribed by Dioscorides in the first century A.D., for pain and inflammation. One of Willow's active principles is salicin, which up until modern medicine, was mostly used for minor aches and pains. In recent times however, European chemists fiddled with salicin and it was an Italian who produced salicylic acid from it. Germany stepped in next and took that acid and synthesized acetylsalicylic acid. We know this synthentic acid as "asprin", and what is on the market today is completely synthetic with no willow derivatives in it at all.
