The 7 Chakras and Their Holistic Meanings

As an herbalist, my work focuses a lot on physical remedies for the body. But, we are not just bodies and it is important to tend to our energy too. Understanding the chakras and incorporating methods that release blocked energies can have a profound effect on our mind, body, and spirit.

Addictions are also very relevant to energy centers, so understanding them may help clue you into what needs to be balanced in order to release that compulsive behavior or urges.

The Root Chakra

The Root Chakra is all about stability, balance, and family. This energy center can often hold onto physical traumas and be impacted by scarcity and survival worries.

It’s located at the base of your tailbone and impacts the parts of your body near there. This includes your feet, legs, skeleton, and blood. The Root Chakra is also associated with addictions to money, security, safety, food, shopping, gambling, alcohol, milk, fats and meats.

The energetic role of the Root Chakra connects with survival and security. If we are ungrounded, it is likely that our Root is not properly balanced. Remedies can temporarily relieve many struggles from restlessness to insecurity to impatience. You’ll also find they are powerful for taming anger and aggression. Lastly, it’s also intended to lessen an obsession with materialistic matters and greed.

If you feel ungrounded or unstable, it’s good to take care of your Root energy. Try this Root Chakra tea, or get yourself a beautiful candle to light during your meditations.

Sacral Chakra

The Sacral chakra is the energy center located near the lower abdomen/pelvis area and connects with the reproductive organs, genitalia, urinary tract, and kidneys. If stubborn ailments in these areas are often or persistently arising, you may be dealing with an imbalance.

It’s often disrupted when we resist the natural flow of life. This can be quite detrimental, as this energy center is known for offering protection, healing, and calming emotional responses–as well as benefiting fertility and sensuality when it’s balanced!

The energetic role of the Sacral Chakra is intense. It is our creative center so, when it’s blocked, we can feel stunted and limited. It also connects with intimacy and emotion–meaning we need to keep this in balance if we want to truly connect with others.

The Sacral Chakra, which involves mainly issues of emotion and sexuality, is also associated with addictions to alcohol, painkillers, sex, porn, gluten, wheat, starchy carbs and chocolate.

Chakra remedies can temporarily relieve the symptoms of imbalance, including being overwhelmed, hypersensitive, and sadness and you’ll also find it will work wonders on managing difficulty trusting others, feeling cold and distant or–in contrast–being needy or dependent.

If you struggle with intimacy or emotion, it’s good to take care of your Sacral energy. Try a Sacral Chakra remedy (in store) or tea, or get yourself a beautiful candle to light during your meditations.

Solar Plexus

The Solar Plexus Chakra is known as the powerhouse of the energy system (much like the mitochondria I talked about last week!). Located near your diaphragm, it connects with everything from the lungs to the liver, adrenals, and the whole digestive system. It’s clearly connected to fueling your body, as breath brings in needed oxygen, your adrenals give you a boost of energy when needed, and your digestive system provides you nourishment.

Not surprisingly, this is also an area many of us find is unbalanced. Digestive issues are some of the most common ailments, after all!

The Solar Plexus, which involves mainly issues in the stomach and sternum, is also associated with addictions to over-working, anger, sex, caffeine, carbonated beverages, and many illegal substances.

The Solar Plexus Chakra has a very meaningful role in regulating our energy. Not only is it located in the center of our abdomen, but it also correlates with power, vitality, and creative force. These are all things we need to thrive as humans!

Chakra remedies can temporarily relieve symptoms associated with fatigue and anxiety. They can also help with self-esteem issues like with self-doubt, powerlessness, feelings of being ineffective or worthless, low self-esteem, anxiousness, anger, or feeling judgy.

If it’s tough to feel empowered or keep your energy balanced, tend to your Solar Plexus chakra. This tea and beautiful candle can help you get back into alignment!

Heart Chakra

Heart health is extremely important…and that includes taking care of your Heart Chakra! This center not only governs the heart and circulatory system (of course), but also the lungs and thymus gland. Conditions and disruptions in these areas can connect with an unbalanced chakra.

Heart Chakra energy affects us in so many ways. It is a center of emotional regulation (especially around grief and compassion). It also connects us with others and inspires deep understanding.

If you find yourself regularly withdrawing from social interactions, isolating, or in the role of a victim, you might have an unbalanced Heart Chakra. The Heart Chakra is also associated with addictions to tobacco, sugar, love, MMJ, sugars and sweets, and opioids.

Chakra remedies can temporarily relieve symptoms associated with the need to bend yourself backwards for others, being overly critical of yourself or others, and feeling apathetic or desiring isolation.

Try this Heart Chakra tea or a remedy (in store only) to get back into balance. (Or get this soothing candle for your meditation times!)

Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra is centered at the base of the neck, and corresponds to many body parts in that area. It impacts the mouth, teeth, esophagus, vocal cords, thyroid, cervical spine, shoulders, and arms. (Wow, so much!)

Because it has everything to do with our neck area, it’s super important to keep this energy center in balance. If you find it’s out of balance, you may have upper digestive ailments, neck and shoulder pain, or other related conditions. The Throat Chakra, which involves mainly issues at the base of the throat, is also associated with addictions to food, tobacco, MMJ and opioids.

Think of the Throat Chakra like the expressive center of your energy system. It's your voice, your truth, and how you show your personality with the world. When it’s out of balance, it can affect many aspects of your life, from causing shyness to irritability.

Chakra remedies can temporarily relieve symptoms associated with imbalances, including shyness and fear of speaking, inability to express your thoughts and feelings, social anxiousness, stubbornness and a fear of being detached from others.

To get your energetic voice back, try this Throat Chakra tea or a nice candle to deepen your healing.

Third Eye Chakra

Third Eye Chakra energy is all about intuition, vision, and perception. This connects with how we see others, the world, and what is to come. Despite the Third Eye Chakra being a very spiritual energy center, it actually connects with a lot of physical parts of the body too! It impacts the eyes, brain, nervous system, ears, and the pituitary and pineal glands. All very important parts of your beautiful body.

If your Third Eye energy is unbalanced, you might find yourself dealing with ailments in these locations or the forehead. It is also associated with addictions to chocolate, caffeine, hallucinogens and most mood-altering substances and activities.

Chakra remedies can temporarily relieve judgmentalness, dismissiveness, detachment from others, a lack of trust in yourself, and being too focused inwards. It will also help resolve the fear of the unknown, along with sadness, indecisiveness, and procrastination.

For a comprehensive healing of the Third Eye chakra, pick up some tea, a remedy (in store only), or a candle

Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra symbolizes a place where your body and the Universe (or your chosen religion) energetically connect. It’s located right at the top of the head, meaning it relates to the nervous system, the pineal gland, and pituitary gland. These regulate so much in our body.

The Crown Chakra also represents our divine connection, feelings of bliss, and our higher consciousness, making this a very spiritual center you’ll want to keep in balance. When it’s not aligned, you may notice apathy, materialism, greed, sadness, worry, and boredom coming up. An unbalanced Crown Chakra can also lead to a general lack of purpose and a boredom with life.

The Crown Chakra, which involves mainly issues located at the top of the head, is also associated with addictions to spiritual seeking (above and beyond what is a healthy daily process) and most mind-altering substances and activities.

If you feel a lack of divine connection, try taking care of your Crown Chakra with this tea or this nice candle!
